Autism Research – Path Towards Finding a Cure
Autism is a chronic neurological disorder which affects approximately 4 out of 1000 children between the ages of 3 to 10 years. The cure for this disorder is still not known. However a number of theories exist on what causes autism. Intensive Autism research can help us discover the genetic, inherited or other causes of autism. There are a number of autism research institutes dedicated towards finding a cure for this disorder.
Evaluating the results
A whole lot of theories exist regarding the causes of Autism. Some talk about the brain cells, some feel the causes are genetic and others blame the environmental factors.
Genetic factor can be a strong reason for the birth of an autistic child. Autism research reveals that if one of the parent has autistic symptoms, there is a huge chance for the baby to be born with autism.
Certain researchers believe that underdevelopment or damage caused to brain cells results in Autism. Human brain contains over 100 billion neurons which connect to other nerve cells in the body. When some of these cells do not develop properly or get damaged, a child might suffer from this disorder.
A very few blame the environmental factors to be the cause of this neurological disorder. However there are not many evidences in autism research that can validate this theory. Also it is known that autism does not have any co-relation with a person’s lifestyle, race or social boundary.
Recently certain parents have speculated that autistic behavior in children seems to occur or worsen after vaccination. However, there are no conclusive facts regarding a connection between vaccines and autism. A lot of autism research committees are investigating this possibility using the latest scientific methods.
Everyone can make a contribution
We still have a long way to go as far as finding a cure for autism is concerned. There are a large number of unknown causes which need to be sought. Studies alone can reveal the causes and hence find a cure too. But intensive autism research requires a lot of money. People should donate as much as possible to their local autism society or charity organizations. However, one must ensure that the funding reaches the right place and is used for the right cause.
There are a lot of autistic people who do not want to be cured. They have learnt to live with this disorder and do not want to be healed. Some believe autism helps in the field of science, math and engineering. Even such individuals and families will benefit from autism research. Educating the society about this disorder will increase awareness.
Autism will no longer be considered a stigma or mental illness, like it is done in some places today.
